Monthly Playlist: January 2024

For the first playlist of 2024, I wanted to feature music that gives us a sense of direction that also acknowledge the turbulent world we live in. It’s an interesting mix of old and new, hopeful and eerie, reflective and energetic. I hope it will give you a moment to ponder on what the new year may bring and give you a sense of momentum to accomplish what you aspire to do.

1.John Adams // Short Ride in a Fast Machine

“You know how it is when someone asks you to ride in a terrific sports car, and then you wish you hadn’t?”

2.Edward Elgar // “Nimrod” from Enigma Variations

“The enigma I will not explain—its ‘dark saying’ must be left unguessed”

3. Missy Mazzoli // Wayward Free Radical Dreams from Verspers for a New Dark Age

“…explore the way we confront technology, ghosts, death, doubt and God in our ‘new dark age’.”

4. Osvaldo Golijov // Paz Sulfúrica from Azul

Inspired by Chilean poet Neruda’s lines: “I plunged a turbulent and tender hand / to the most secret organs of the earth.”

5. Gustav Holst // Jupiter from The Planets

"Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity"
